The RISD Museum’s publications platform has won a Silver Summit Creative Award in the Education category.
It is the platform behind the museum’s online exhibitions, and the recognition arrived in the year it was asked to do something it was never scoped for.
What It Was Asked to Absorb
An art school’s graduate exhibition is a physical event with a hard problem behind it: the work is the argument, and photographs of the work are not. A show that moves online has to give each student’s thesis room to be understood rather than flattening everything into a grid of thumbnails.
In 2020 the museum needed two shows online — one for more than 270 graduate students, one for more than 450 undergraduates — six weeks after the concepts were approved, with per-author permissions across hundreds of contributors. The case study covers how the platform took it.
The following year the graduate exhibition was a Webby nominee.
About the Award
The Summit Creative Award recognizes creative work from companies billing under $40 million, judged against a standard rather than against the field, with Gold, Silver and Bronze tiers. It is run by the same organization as the Summit International Awards.
