Rhode Island’s digital platform wins an Acquia Engage Award

Winner in Doers — Leader of the Pack, Public Sector, for the platform that puts roughly a hundred state agencies on one voice and one standard.

October 4, 2022

The State of Rhode Island’s digital services platform has won a 2022 Acquia Engage Award in the Doers category, Leader of the Pack, Public Sector. Acquia credits the work to the State of Rhode Island with NIC RI and Oomph (now Pare & Co).

What the Platform Does

A state government is not one publisher. It is around a hundred of them — agencies, departments, boards and commissions, each with its own mandate, its own subject matter experts and its own idea of what a web page is for.

The platform’s job is to let all of them publish without the result reading like a hundred different governments. One design system, one accessibility standard, one editorial voice, and a content model that lets an agency say what only it knows while everything structural stays common. The case study covers how the federation was built.

The same architecture distributes emergency and public-health messaging, where a single notice has to reach every relevant agency site at once and be correct on all of them.
