RAID the Icebox Now has been nominated for a Webby Award in the General Websites Art category.
What the Exhibition Was
RAID the Icebox is a RISD Museum idea with a long history: invite an artist into the collection store — the vast majority of a museum’s holdings, which the public never sees — and let them curate from it. What comes back out is a show the museum’s own curators would not have made.
RAID the Icebox Now extended that across a series of exhibitions, and the digital publication had to do something a catalog normally does not. The premise is that a different eye finds different things in the same store. So the publication had to hold each artist’s selection as its own argument, with its own visual logic, rather than flattening the series into one house style.
The Platform Underneath
The publication runs on the RISD Museum publications platform, built so the museum’s editorial team could produce long-form, image-led pieces without a developer, and so each piece could take the shape its subject needed rather than the shape a template allowed.
The platform was nominated again the following year, for the online graduate student exhibition.
