n8n is a workflow engine with several hundred integrations, native AI and agent nodes, and source-available code a security team can read. It deploys in n8n’s cloud or on a client’s own infrastructure, and self-hosting is what matters for regulated work: the automation runs inside the client’s network, on the client’s credentials, and the record of what ran stays with them. We use it to connect AI models to the systems where the work happens, and to keep automations running on a schedule, unattended.

Partnership in practice
n8n runs the workflow layer of the Intelligence practice, and the clearest example is our own. Penny, the firm’s finance agent, answers revenue questions in Slack and raises what needs attention before anyone asks. She is two n8n workflows: Claude does the reasoning, deterministic code computes every metric before the model sees the question, and n8n handles the schedule, the credentials and the delivery. Onboarding a colleague is adding a row to a table, not editing the workflow.
Self-hosting is why we chose it. An automation that reads a health system’s records or a university’s student data often cannot run in a third party’s cloud at all. n8n installs inside the client’s network and runs on the client’s credentials, so a security review reads the code and the logs rather than a vendor’s assurances.
The split of labor is consistent. A frontier model does the reasoning; n8n does everything around it — the trigger, the retry, the approval step where a person signs off, and the record of what ran and why. When the work is pure orchestration, n8n is enough on its own.
