No-Spin Evidence Review wins a Davey Silver

Silver in Social Responsibility, for a Coalition for Evidence-Based Policy project built on a premise most policy publishing quietly abandons.

No-Spin Evidence Review has won a Silver Davey Award in the Social Responsibility category. The project was built for the Coalition for Evidence-Based Policy.

The Premise

Policy evidence is rarely presented neutrally. A program evaluation arrives already framed by whoever is publishing it — an advocate, a funder, an agency with a budget line to defend — and the framing is usually more legible than the finding.

No-Spin Evidence Review takes the opposite position: report what the strongest studies actually found, including when the answer is that a popular intervention does not work, or that the evidence is too thin to say. That is a harder thing to publish than it sounds, because the useful result is often the disappointing one.

What That Demands of the Design

A publication built on that premise cannot use the persuasive apparatus of the genre it sits in. No hero statistic chosen for impact, no visual emphasis that quietly ranks findings by how compelling they are rather than how well supported.

The design problem becomes one of restraint: make a null result as readable and as findable as a positive one, and make the strength of the underlying evidence visible on the page rather than buried in a methodology note.
