Earthwatch wins a Davey Silver

Silver in the Science category, for a citizen science organization whose website has to convert curiosity into people who actually board a plane and do fieldwork.

Earthwatch’s website has won a Silver Davey Award in the Science category.

What the Site Has to Accomplish

Earthwatch places members of the public alongside field scientists on real research expeditions — counting wildlife, sampling water, recording data that ends up in published work.

The conversion problem is unusually steep. Most non-profit websites ask for money or a signature. This one asks someone to take annual leave, pay to participate, travel to a remote location and do physical work in conditions they cannot fully picture in advance.

That means the site cannot stop at inspiring. It has to answer the practical, slightly awkward questions a person needs settled before they will commit — what the days actually look like, how fit you need to be, where you sleep, what happens if the science is tedious — without draining the thing that made them curious in the first place. The case study covers how the expedition content was structured to do both.

About the Award

The Davey Awards honor creative work from small agencies, judged by the Academy of Interactive and Visual Arts among peers of comparable size.
